Wind Phones
Pick up the phone and speak the words you want to say. To someone you love. Someone you miss. A friend. A family member. A pet. Your younger self. Your future self.
There is no right or wrong - say your words out loud where no one will hear them and the wind will have a way to heal your soul.
The Bournemouth Writing Festival is creating a network of Wind Phones across Dorset, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, giving people free places to pause, reflect and connect through the power of words.
What is a Wind Phone?
A Wind Phone is a disconnected telephone installed in a peaceful outdoor location.
Initiated in Japan, they encourage reflection, wellbeing, mindfulness and emotional expression.
Dial a name, a memory or a moment.
Then simply speak from the heart.
Many people use Wind Phones to remember loved ones who have died. Others use them to celebrate happy memories, share positive news, practise difficult conversations or take a quiet moment for themselves.
The wind will take care of the rest.
Or perhaps you can use it for your writing. Read dialogue aloud. Speak to your characters. Test a conversation before it reaches the page. Share a poem with the sea, a story with the trees, or a first draft with the wind.
Pick up the phone and dial a character and ask them a question.
Tell them what they should do next. Argue with them. Listen to what they might say back. You might be surprised where the conversation takes you.

Wind Phones for Dorset
The Bournemouth Writing Festival plans to scatter these wind phones across the conurbation - Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and perhaps into the far reaches of Dorset - as a pop-up/temporary feature for festivals, events, cafes, local businesses, care homes or anyone who wants to have one for a few days.
Find a location by keeping an eye on our social channels, pick up the phone and let the wind carry your words to them. It's free.
By donating, sponsoring a phone or commissioning a bespoke Wind Phone for your school, business, charity, care home or community group, you'll help create places where people can share the words that matter most.
Together, we can create a county-wide network of Wind Phones that support wellbeing, connection, creativity and conversation.
All proceeds go to the Bournemouth Writing Festival to continue our work in the community to inspire all writers to write, regardless of their age, background or ability.
