Making Waves Showcase Finale

Arts University Bournemouth presents a showcase of new and emerging writers from different areas of our community.

This showcase of new writing will celebrate and highlight a range of writers from marginalised backgrounds including working class, LGBTQ+, people of colour, and disabled writers.

Hosted by Arts University Bournemouth’s BA (Hons) Creative Writing, you will hear the incredible talent from local writers and students, offering an insightful and powerful evening of prose and poetry.

We will share our stories and our voices, showing how we’re making waves.

Pier Journal is a printed community magazine that champions all the people, places, organisations and events that make Dorset great. Launched in Bournemouth in 2022, it's since grown and this year celebrated its 10th edition with the launch of memberships for individuals and businesses. Created and printed in Dorset, thousands of copies are distributed for free to cafes, shops and venues reaching around 25,000 people a year.

Each edition has a theme, which the content reflects. The Spring/Summer edition includes a festival guide, the Autumn/Winter, a student guide. The volunteer team behind the journal support would-be writers, editors, photographers and designers with work experience and mentoring, and give paid opportunities to early career creatives, including writers and illustrators.

More than a magazine, Pier bridges the gap between students and local businesses, creating opportunities, fostering growth and keeping talent in Dorset. It has a growing digital presence, runs sold out events and has a consultancy arm - matching freelancers with organisations in need of services such as writing, photography, campaign planning and delivery, communications strategy and design. Founder and Art Director Sammy Murphy said: "Print is not dead. It's alive and kicking here in Dorset and we'll make sure it stays that way."

Co-Director and Editorial Lead Laura Williams, who has previously run magazines in Bristol, added: "Pier Journal is a real placemaking publication - inspiring people to stay local, shop local, eat local and keep up to date with all the great stuff happening in this brilliant county."
