Schools Competition

Get your kids and pupils involved in writing with our fantastic nature-themed writing competition! With an exclusive introduction video from Chris Packham!

The competition is open to all Primary and Secondary Schools, plus home-educated children, in Dorset.

Deadline 28th March 2024.

We've teamed up with Dorset Goes WILD and Hengistbury Head Writers' Group for a nature-themed writing competition to inspire your pupils and children to get writing. 

We've created resources for educators to use, plus we have awesome prizes to give away to the winners.

Four Age Categories

  • Key Stage 1 - 5 to 6 year olds

  • Key Stage 2 - 7 to 10 year olds

  • Key Stage 3 - 11 to 13 year olds

  • Key Stage 4 - 14 to 16 year olds

Please state the child's age on your entry.

Competition Theme

We would like the children to write a story or poem about a special natural environment in Dorset from the point of view of an Albatross, flying in from the Southern Ocean.

How might their stories or poems inspire us to do good things or change the world?

Children must use their imaginations, as well as their locality, to create an engaging and exciting work of fiction.

We've designed classroom Powerpoint slides and a teacher information pack to help you along - providing prompts and guidance on creating a stunning story or powerful poem!

Deadline for Entries

Word limit: Poems of no more than 40 lines and stories of no more than 500 words.

Please send your entries, stating the age category and school (if not home-schooled) to Info@BournemouthWritingFestival.co.uk before the end of the Spring Term -

28th March 2024.

All entries will be judged by the Hengistbury Head Writers' Group, led by Jane Skellett. Winners will be announced before the Bournemouth Writing Festival at the end of April.
